![]() Candidates who are comfortable working in changing environments turn into employees that thrive at Luminar, Tolentino told Insider. What Luminar is doing is novel, and requires candidates to be comfortable with essentially creating their own toolbox. ![]() This is how you do it.' It's really about taking the learnings that you've had in the past, and applying that to what you could do here at Luminar." ![]() "It's not as simple as, 'Oh, yeah, I know how to do that. "A lot of the stuff that we're doing is stuff that nobody's done before," Tye Tolentino, VP of global talent acquisition at Luminar, said. Be a team player who can handle ambiguity Insider spoke with Luminar's hiring team to get a sense of what they're looking for and how they find it. The startup's approach focuses on what candidates do and say during the interviewing process, rather than what they don't do. To find the right people to make that happen, Luminar emphasizes the importance of the individual over a perfectly polished résumé and cover letter. Refining and delivering the startup's lidar calls for hiring innovative employees who can think outside of the bounds of industry opinion. Volvo says that, with Luminar's tech, it will be able to bring a "fully self-driving" highway system to Volvo's vehicles by 2022. Russell, who pays no mind to lidar skeptics, recently struck a deal with Volvo. The Orlando-based company's team of about 400 employees is led by the world's youngest self-made billionaire, 26-year-old Austin Russell. Virtually all serious developers of autonomous driving systems, however, consider lidar a critical sensor, albeit one that can only work in consumer cars if someone can solve the ridding of making it far cheaper and more robust than the sensors used by the likes of Waymo and Cruise. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has called the laser-based tech a costly fool's errand, arguing that a capable autonomous driving system can work off of cameras, radars, and very smart software. Luminar is pioneering the use of lidar sensors in consumer cars by cutting the cost of lidar sensors with their technology.
